Chair Number 8 silently still, ascends Ruud Mountain in a soft snowfall. Sun Valley, Idaho. March 16, 2025.
The Ruud Lift. Built in 1938 by the Union Pacific Railroad, this single-seat chairlift is the oldest standing ski lift in the world and part of the very first generation of ski lifts. It was the third lift in a pioneering series, following the Dollar and Proctor Mountain lifts (1936–37). The original 1936 lift is now preserved at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum in Michigan.
