Mountain West Plank Archive -The Alpine Trail Signs from PBBPhoto
Over the course of a decade, I photographed nearly every old or antique ski I came across throughout the western U.S. I wasn’t sure what the project would become at first, only that I felt drawn to preserve these well-worn pieces of ski history, dating from the early to late 20th century. All are straight skis, built before carving and sidecut designs took hold.
Eventually, I found a way to bring them together - collaged into the shapes of classic ski trail rating signs: a Black Diamond, a Blue Square, and a Green Circle. Each piece is toned and styled accordingly, each sign bringing out something different in the eighty-plus skis featured across the three works. Every ski was individually photographed, edited, and arranged.
The project became a labor of love - months spent honoring the design, texture, and patina of the skis that once carved the Mountain West.
